THE EGYPTIAN AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY
DEVELOPMENT PLAN (AIDP) - The Automotive Assembly
and Component Manufacturing Industry is universally
recognized as a key strategic sector for stimulating
multiplier effects in terms of industrial transformation. It
is a powerful driver of employment, foreign investment,
innovation and economic growth, through its direct and
indirect contribution to GDP and the design of the AIDP will
stabilize the balance of payments. The automotive industry
is an advanced form of manufacturing based on economies
of scale and, whilst not located in all economies, it is a global
production and trade system, associated with high levels of
industrialisation. Multinational OEMs have global production
and trade systems determined by access to markets,
industrial infrastructure and a coherent, consistent and
comprehensive policy programme. To attract investment by
global OEMs (vehicles and componentry), it is a requirement
for Egypt to implement a comprehensive Automotive
Industry Development Programme. These foreign investors
are key considering the current technology revolution and
globally competitive landscape and will provide partnering
opportunities for domestic investors through the automotive
value chain. The AIDP is an integrated and comprehensive
industrial policy that provides a stable regulatory environment
fully compliant will all international commitments that will
provide automotive investors with certainty and condence.
Africa’s automotive sector remains vastly underdeveloped
and dominated by second hand imports, presenting major
opportunity for manufacturing growth through consistent
policy implementation; Egypt will be positioned as a hub
assembler participating in the African production and trade
system that is developing within the signicant single market
of the AfCFTA. With the development of a progressive
auto ecosystem as articulated in the AIDP, the low level of
motorisation in Egypt provides signicant opportunity for
new vehicle demand.
