What is a Study Permit?
This is the official document issued by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) officer that allows a
person who is not a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident to study in Canada. Generally, if you are a foreign national
you must obtain a study permit in order to study in Canada.
When to extend your Study Permit?

to-apply.html) to find out when to extend your study permit. Make sure your passport does not expire at the same
time. Your study permit cannot be extended beyond your passport’s expiry date.

How to request for a Study Permit Extension Letter from KPU?
1. Make sure KPU has a record of your current study permit, so your letter can be processed.
2. Complete and submit your Study Permit Extension Letter Request Form which can be found at
www.kpu.ca/international/internationalstudents/forms-and-letters (and select “Study Permit Extension Letter”
under the pull-down menu).
3. Receive your letter via email in your KPU email account within 20 business days.
Maintained Status
You must apply to extend your study permit through IRCC before it expires. If you have done so, as long as you remain
in Canada, you can stay and study in Canada under ‘Maintained Status’ until a decision is made to your application. You
may also register for courses at KPU under Maintained Status. To learn more about Maintained Status, please visit

What should I do once I receive my Study Permit Extension?
1. IMPORTANT: Bring a copy of your new Study Permit to KPU International so we can update your student file at
KPU (this is important in order for you to register for classes).
2. Renew your BCMSP coverage. Find out more online at www.health.gov.bc.ca/msp
3. Renew your Social Insurance Number (SIN) if applicable.
4. Extend your Temporary Resident Visa (visitor visa) or Co-op work permit if applicable.
