Friday morning assessment – The first hour of class is partly devoted to making sure everyone’s in the right class.
You may have an opportunity to switch to a different class at the break, but all morning class changes require approval
from the director, who will check in with everyone mid-morning. PLEASE talk to the director about any class changes.
Class comfort – If it’s cold, ask your TA to turn up the heat! No need to sit around in your coats, we do have heaters. If the
weather is nice, we encourage you to move your class outdoors, at the discretion of your teacher.
Heaters can be hard to figure out—ask ranch staff for help if you’re too hot or too cold and can’t adjust it.
Dining seatingat lunch Friday and Saturday will be by regions or topics; look for signs on tables.
Instructorseat with the director at lunchtime. This is not meant to be elitist, it’s just our staff meeting time. They’ll eat
with you at dinner time, and at breakfast everyone is welcome at the staff tables. In the lunch line, instructors are allowed, in
fact required, to cut in line to save time. Thanks.
Ranch Store – is in the dining hall, Open to sell Teacher Merchandise from 1:00pm – 2:00pm, on Fri, Sat, & Sun only
Lost and found is located at the front desk at the dining hall.
Perishable food – can be kept in the refrigerators of the lodges, or the Discovery building Kitchen. Label your food!
GuestsDrop-in guests are not allowed without making special arrangements. Please do not invite your friends and family
to visit you here. Thanks.
Lodging – Any problems with your room, let us know, but please do not switch rooms without approval—thanks.
Extra blankets are available if you need them (in the lodges), just ask.
Ping pong tablesare on the patio by the dining hall. There are also basketball and volleyball courts near the ranch office,
and tetherball. Balls are in the ball pit between the ranch office and the main road; please return them after use.
The front deskat the dining hall will be staffed daily from breakfast to dinner and someone there will be able to help
you with any questions or problems. The director, if not there, can be located by radio. First aid kit is there, too.
After dinner – if you need help, ranch staff is on duty till 10 p.m. and located at the ranch office or dining hall.
After hours help – For any problems after 10 pm, call Michael Bryant – (707) 953-9058.
TelephonesThere are payphones at the Ranch Office & Buckeye Room. You can probably use your phone through the
wifi here, or get cell reception if you exit the ranch, turn right, and drive a few miles west to the top of the hill.
Lanyard/name tag recycling – We’ll collect lanyards Sunday, and your name badge if you don’t want it.
Changes happen! – and will be posted on the easel whiteboard at the dining hall, and also announced.
Bulletin board at the dining hall is for communication, not only from us to you, but also for you to communicate with
each otherfor setting up DYI jams, posting lost & found items, arranging rides, etc.
Bathrooms During class time, please use only bathrooms that are accessible without disturbing classes (e.g. in dining
hall, or in Discovery Building accessed by door closest to the bathhouse).
Class courtesy Many students complain about their fellow classmates who noodle or talk at inappropriate times. Please
be considerate; refrain from playing or talking when it will be distracting to others. Thanks!
Camp Music Store/Luthier – Unfortunately, we don’t have a camp store/luthier at this camp. We will be selling
Teacher Merchandise in the WCR Camp Store inside the Dining Hall right after lunch on Fri, Sat & Sun.
Instrument storage – If you need a place to stash your instrument at any time, Maple Room is a good place for that.
Outdooor class or jam locations – Many of us feel most comfortable being outside these days. Feel free to find your own
outdoor areas, but we also want to point some out that are covered and could be especially good for this:
Anywhere under the eaves around the bathhouse building;
Covered patio area outside Live Oak, in the central campus, new to us this year (see the map);
Deck at the Buckeye Room;
Covered area outside of Pine Lodge;
Covered area outside of the Mountain Lion Lodge.

Banjo, Backup up the neck – Frank Evans In this workshop we will discuss some of the more advanced techniques
of backup on the banjo. We will learn specific shapes as well as roll patents that will add a new depth to your ability

Fiddle, Rare Old Tunes from Alabama and West Virginia – Jimmy Triplett This repertoire session will highlight
rare gems I've discovered from musicians in rural Alabama and West Virginia. Let's put these tunes back in

Fiddle Workout – Natalie Padilla Fiddle Workout: Learn effective warmups and exercises that will help build solid
foundations of technique, tone and timing on the fiddle. These are meant to build confidence and control, so we can

Guitar, The Swing Chop – Larry Chung We’ll explore the many ways to introduce a swing feel into your guitar
playing by introducing a few of the more common swing chords and the distinct rhythmic approach of both the strum

Guitar, Alternate Tunings for Guitar (with emphasis on Irish accompaniment) – Eamon O’Leary Irish guitar
playing has often incorporated a variety of alternate tunings. We’ll have a look at some of the lesser-known ones

Guitar, Banjo, Introduction to clawhammer – Steve Baughman The simple "bum ditty" of clawhammer banjo
creates an amazingly rich sound on the guitar. Bass notes, chords, groove and melody all emerge from one hand
movement. We'll immerse ourselves in this basic pattern. For intermediate banjo and guitar – no prior clawhammer

Ukulele from Scratch! – Krishna Feeney This class uses only two things: you and your uke! We will start making
music together right away, adding one skill at a time until you can play literally hundreds of songs. It seems too good
to be true, but that is the magic of the ukulele. This class is appropriate for complete beginners. All ages are welcome.

Vocals, Interpretation and Delivery: Improving Your Bluegrass Vocals – Greg Blake Not everyone has the range
of a Monroe or a Del or a Bobby Osborne, etc. - however, you can still learn how to deliver a song with feeling,
expression, clarity and “edge” that will be palatable to all audiences and self-satisfying. We’ll work on helping you
find where your “edge” is and give you some pointers on phrasing and vocal ornamentation. Fireside

Bluegrass Banjo and others, How to Play in Any Key No Capo – Glen B If you have ever been in a situation where
you’ve lost or forgotten your capo and need to play a tune without it in a key you are unfamiliar with, this workshop
will reveal a few simple techniques to help you through that situation. While there is an emphasis on the 5-string
banjo, the same procedure can be applied to any fretted and/or chorded string instrument. Bring pencil and paper or a
recorder of some type. Oh, and don’t forget your instrument. Trout
Fiddle, Tone on the Fiddle – Liz Knowles This will be a deep dive into practicing, creating and deepening your
understanding of tone on the fiddle. Bring your fiddles! Maple
Fiddle, Learn a Tune – Paul Shelasky Paul will teach an easy fiddle tune, suitable for beginners, but it’s the same
version he plays on stage. It’s called “Little Rabbit Where’s Your Mammy” and it was popularized in the 1960s by
Richard Greene. He learned it from a 1930s recording by Crockett’s Kentucky Mountaineers, who performed out of
Fresno, CA. Bay
Guitar, Breaks on Vocal Tunes – Darryl Poulsen What should I play for my break on a vocal tune? What scales do I
use to improvise?” Let's talk about all that and more. We will learn beginner, intermediate and advanced versions of a
few vocal tunes. Having a fundamental understanding of the relationship between the melody and chords is very
important for improvising and transposing. Fireside
Guitar, Flatpicking Irish Tunes – Dave Cory We will look at all aspects of flat-picking Irish tunes in standard tuning
on guitar including tunes, ornamentation, position shifting, picking patterns, etc. Madrone
Mandolin, Double Stops – David T Come explore the power of double stops for improvisation and their value as a
roadmap around the fretboard. We’ll focus on a few basic double stop positions that can be used in any key and how
they are used over common chord progressions. We’ll also learn useful licks to move between double stops that can

Musical Saw – Mary Kato Learn the basics of playing the singing saw. Bring a saw! It doesn’t have to be an official
“singing saw”; any wood hand saw, not too rusty, will do. Also bring an old bow (it gets dirty!) or dowel rod for the
bowing. Supplies and instruction will be provided to make your own wooden “tip handle”, and then we’ll play! Otter
Vocals, 3-part Harmonies – Carlo C, Sara W & Maureen B We’ll help you learn how to find the two harmony parts

Dobro, Learn a song or solo of your choice by ear togetherGreg Booth Pick a song or a dobro break you want to
learn and we’ll figure it out together. It could be a classic jam circle tune or an obscure dobro solo from a record,
anything goes. We’ll go through the process of deciding what key and where to play it, dissecting the nuts and bolts
of learning a song on the dobro. We’ll need to hear it so pick something online, on YouTube or bring a recording on

classical music and therefore should follow that same model! Not necessarily true! This workshop will offer some
guidance for how to design a practice that supports the kind of the music you want to play. This is open to all styles

Black Family legacy of Song – Michael Black The Black Family are the foremost family of song in Ireland and have
passed their love of songs on to their respective children, most of whom are now touring professionals. This
presentation describes the roots of that family legacy originating in Dublin and a remote island in Northern Ireland.

Vocals, Learn Duet Singing – Ryan and Michaela Singing in a duet is about a lot more than the harmony notes. It’s
about matching vowels, note lengths, consonant timing, and even breathing. Michaela and Ryan will share their own
duet-singing techniques and then we’ll form some class duets to try things out! Museum

7:15 - 9:15 – Student concert – All full-time campers are invited (not required) to participate. If you’ve never
been on stage before, this is a great place to start. Rules: you can play in 1 group only! (exception: you can also
play in an all-class group). Total stage time 3 minutes max! Please no introductions, medleys, or numerous
verses – short & sweet, please! That said, we encourage you to participate; you won’t find a more supportive
